Scope note
Magnificent state beds used in the ceremonial bedrooms of a noble or royal residence, coined in 18th-century French usage. Such beds were not intended to be used for routine sleeping, but for example, for the display of a royal newborn with his mother, of the sick or dying monarch, etc.
